How To Dream Big

by Valerie Hylen

As Donald Trump says, “If you are going to dream, you might as well Dream BIG!”

Everything that people have accomplished in life has started with an idea or a dream.

Many of us stay stuck in horrible jobs, bad marriages or living in houses we hate because we don’t dream of having something better!

Having a dream doesn’t necessarily mean you have to know how to make the dream come true.

The clearer your dream is of what you want the better. Keep a journal. Write your dreams down in minute detail and in the present tense, as if the dream is already reality. For instance, if you want a new car, write down the make, model, year, color, interior color – in other words, be as specific as you can possibly be about what you want!

Next, write down why you want this dream to come true. What will the realization of this dream mean to you and your family? For example, having your dream job may provide a large increase in income that will enable you to buy a home for your family, send your children to college, or allow you to spend more time with your family.

What will you FEEL like when your dreams become reality? For instance, what will it FEEL like to sit in the new car you described above and know it is finally yours? What will the leather interior smell like when climb into the driver’s seat? How will the car accelerate and handle the curves. How will I feel when I take my family and friends for a drive? Again, be as specific as possible and try to actually FEEL these feelings as if it were already reality. If need be, go to a car dealership and sit in the exact car you want to own.

Successful dreamers ask lots and lots of great questions like

If time and money were no problem, what would I do?

Who would be a great mentor? This could be someone you know, someone you could contact, or someone whose work or life you could study?

What skills do I need to learn?

In order to start to pursue my dream, what do I need to start doing, and what do I need to stop doing?

Make a list of all the questions you can think of.

Ask yourself what one small step you could take to begin pursuing your dream and take that step. After all, the tallest mountain is climbed one step at a time.

Be a problem solver. You are bound to have self doubt and to encounter problems along the way. Successful people are problem solvers, not complainers.

Ask for help when you need it. Successful people know that they often need help and are not afraid to ask for it.

Don’t give up. Successful people know that the process is part of life’s journey and that failure is not permanent.
